What Methods Are Used in Cancer Treatment?

Today, it is not limited to a single method: surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies can be used alone or in combination. The primary aim of these approaches is to eliminate cancerous cells, to halt the progression of the disease, and to preserve the patient's quality of life. In modern oncology, a personalised approach holds a central place. Even in two patients with the same type of cancer, the treatments may differ owing to genetic variations in tumour behaviour. Cancers detected at an early stage can often be treated through local and limited approaches, whilst advanced stages require more extensive systemic treatments. This is why multidisciplinary teams comprising surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists collaborate in order to determine the most appropriate therapeutic combination.

In Which Cases Is Surgical Treatment Preferred?

Surgical treatment involves physically removing cancerous tissue from the body and remains one of the oldest and most effective methods. It is generally preferred at the early stages of cancer, when the tumour has not yet invaded the surrounding tissues. In cancers such as breast, colon, or certain lung cancers, a surgical procedure can make it possible to eliminate the tumour entirely and to control the disease. Surgery is not limited to the removal of the tumour the lymph nodes are also examined in order to assess the extent of the disease.

However, surgery alone is not always sufficient. In some cases, chemotherapy or radiotherapy is administered before the procedure in order to reduce the size of the tumour, thereby making its removal easier. After the operation, additional treatments may be necessary to eliminate any remaining microscopic cancerous cells. In advanced cancers, surgery may also be performed with a palliative intent, in order to relieve symptoms and to improve the patient's quality of life.

When Is Chemotherapy Necessary?

Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment that aims to destroy rapidly dividing cancerous cells. It is generally indicated when the risk of dissemination is high or when metastases are present. Chemotherapy agents circulate in the blood and act throughout the body, which makes it possible to target not only the primary tumour but also invisible microscopic cancerous cells. This characteristic makes it a cornerstone of the treatment of many cancers.

Chemotherapy can be used at different stages of treatment. It may be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant treatment) in order to reduce the size of the tumour, or after surgery (adjuvant treatment) in order to decrease the risk of recurrence. At advanced stages, it is also used to control the disease and to alleviate symptoms. Although side effects vary from one patient to another, recent advances in medication and supportive care now make it possible to manage them more effectively. Regular monitoring of the patient's condition allows dosages and treatment protocols to be adjusted.

How Are Radiotherapy and Targeted Therapies Chosen?

Radiotherapy uses high-energy radiation to damage the DNA of cancerous cells and to bring about their destruction. It is a local treatment that acts directly on the tumour area. It is particularly effective in cancers such as those of the head and neck, the prostate, and certain brain cancers. Radiotherapy may be used after surgery to eliminate residual cells, or as an alternative when surgery is not possible.

Targeted therapies, for their part, aim at specific molecular characteristics of the cancerous cells. Unlike conventional chemotherapy, they spare healthy cells to a greater degree and act in a more precise manner. Their use depends on the genetic and molecular analyses of the tumour. For example, certain specific mutations make it possible to administer tailored treatments that offer greater effectiveness. Biopsies and molecular tests therefore play an essential role in the selection of these treatments.

How Is a Combined Treatment Plan Developed?

Combined treatment involves associating several therapeutic methods, either simultaneously or sequentially. Today, for many types of cancer, this approach is regarded as the most effective. For example, chemotherapy may be used to reduce the size of the tumour, followed by surgery to remove it, and then radiotherapy to eliminate remaining cells. This multidimensional strategy makes it possible to increase the chances of success significantly.

The development of a combined treatment plan is based on several factors, including the patient's age, their general health, the stage of the cancer, and its biological characteristics. Potential side effects and the patient's tolerance are also taken into account. Multidisciplinary teams assess all of these elements in order to define a personalised strategy. The aim is not only to treat the disease but also to preserve the patient's quality of life and to improve their long-term survival.
